Read/follow the generic instructions first, then look at the Mac OS X part of our wiki for any additional comments. In particular the generic instructions give you an example of how to set the installation prefix, and you have not followed those. Thus, you currently do have a default install location of /usr/local so I would advise starting over with clean source tree and empty build tree.
