There have been several rounds of discussion with this user off list which I
will summarize here for the benefit of the list.
He had no trouble with the CMake build, but it turns out he was using RHEL
4.0 which was released in 2005. Our cairo devices are just not compatible
with the 2005 pango/cairo software that is available on that distro. For
example, the essential pangocairo.pc pkg-config file that we use was not
available for that vintage of pango/cairo, and I am sure there are deeper
incompatibilities as well since so much has happened in the last three years
of pango/cairo software development.
I have advised he switch to a more up-to-date distribution if he wants
to use our cairo devices.
