Since configure does *not* run on win32, I'm grateful for a non-unix
build configuration option.  Before cmake, there was pretty much
no hope of a cross-platform build environment to support win32
without a whole bunch of added stuff---e.g., it is not really just win32
any more...

As near as I can tell, the main issues with cmake are along the lines
of "it doesn't work" which are exactly the same ones you get with
autoshell stuff.  It is just that configure has been around longer so
most of the rough edges have been sanded smooth for platforms
on which it works.

Feedback from different platforms is exactly what is needed!
