The following has been in our release notes since we deprecated our gd
devices (as of 5.9.3):

"[...]you can still use these deprecated devices by setting PLD_png,
PLD_jpeg, or PLD_gif to ON."

Of course, you will have to have libgd installed somewhere and inform
cmake of that location (with appropriate setting of CMAKE_LIBRARY_PATH
and CMAKE_INCLUDE_PATH).
