That is no mistake: you need a connection to some X window
server, either on the machine you are running on or on a
different machine. The X window server is identified by 
the
DISPLAY environment variable or the "-display servername"
command line option.

For a local server, the name is something like ":0.0" or
"localhost:0.0".
