Have you tried the binary from the 5.6.1 sources?

I was able to get the x01c file to display properly by putting everything in
the same folder and using the Windows cmd prompt.
However, when I tried to view one of the (much bigger,, 27 MB) files I needed
to see, I got the following message:
Error: incapable of reading metafile version 2005a.
Please obtain a newer copy of plrender.
