Free software projects are normally not "designed", but instead evolve,
so there will be no "justification" to why it works the way it does.
It works this way, because this is the solution that has survived...

If your changes improve the code I don't see any reason to why anyone
would find it "crude and insensitive." Still, you can't really "change
the code without communication", since free software projects with no
maintainer and anonymous commits to CVS are quite rare ;-)

It has been suggested several times in the past and so far no one has 
told me how they intend to solve the problem with moving inside a
"page" that now would consist of several records? The current code 
depends on accurate information about the position in a page.
