Something I've been using in pilot-link lately is that 'whole'
numbers will be stable releases, and other 'non-whole' numbers are
development or test releases. Example: 0.10.99 is a development release, but
0.11 is a stable release (oh wait, it's not a 'true' whole number, but you
know what I mean. In this case, we haven't reached 1.0 yet, so it gets a
little weird. I mentally drop the leading zero).
Even/odd also works, as long as you don't get them out of sync, and
can still do even.even.even.odd and so on, like 1.2.1.2 (odd?) and 1.2.2
(even?).
