The setup doesn't configure the viewer depth (modifying the viewer isn't going to happen from the desktop end of things). You could try make a pitch to Michael or Adam for support of taking the highest default on a first run of the viewer or hires viewer software, and see what they say. The color depth of device in the setup wizard for the Desktop is just used to: (a) Preselect the default for new channels to that bit depth you specified. and (b) Cap all demo channels in the list to a max of that bpp, so that a new user doesn't crawl at 8bpp with a 4bpp device, and wonder where the images are (currently there is just one demo channel, that is 1bpp anyways, but there will be more and better ones later on).
