For the viewer, the icons are separate resources from the code. You can put in whatever icons you want: they are all in a sub dir of the viewer. If there are some nice icons, perhaps there can be a compile switch to change the icons.
However, this is pretty far back on the priority of things. Ditto goes for the Plucker Desktop. There, you don't even need to recompile, just drop in some new icons according to your heart's desire (in the /resources directory). Capacity has been put in so that the icon sets can be switched at runtime, that is what Preferences > Interface > Theme is for. There will eventually be icons that match the platform spec for icons: GTK, OSX, etc. However, that is pretty low on the priority list too.
