Can't tell you what the current version does, but I seem to recall that previously the python parser simply passed the images to the configured tool for conversion to the configured setting. If such intelligence in image conversion were to be implemented, it would presumably be in the image converter then rather than the parser. (I switched to JPluck a while ago, which probably uses Java's internal image converters.)
