I hit this a lot, too, but only when I'm tapping with my fingernail.
(Even with 2-3 tries, it's still faster than pulling out the stylus. :-)
The link will darken briefly (so I know the tap was registered) but
won't be followed. With the stylus, the tap always works.
I suspect the same as Marko, that it's related to the duration of the
tap. I have better luck when I concentrate on tapping fairly slowly
and hard and on not letting the rest of my finger brush the screen as
the fingernail taps.
