I created a bug ticket for myself earlier today (#168) to get this issue
resolved. Basically, its next on my list.

Earlier on, there was a muxed up setting in the preferences for the
bitdepth. I've fixed it in cvs, but in actuality the renderer might have
been in 8bpp the first time you tried it, then switched to 16bpp (where
it was supposed to be) and failed. That issue has been fixed in the CVS,
but obviously I want to get proper 16bpp support working.

I should have a new test-build out before the end of the week
(or early next) to try out on.
