This is improved in JPluck 0.9 prerelease 2. There will no longer be a restriction on the size of the images. The image converter will calculate a maximum possible image size, taking into account the aspect ratio and bit depth, and resize the image accordingly. Note that 16bpp only allows for an 173x173 area and 8bpp for an 244x244 area. In other words, you can't have color images that fill the entire screen on a hires device(presumably the 310x310 area you're referring to). This is due to the 60K data limit. Anyway, it looks pretty good in the hires emulator. (I don't have a hires device myself.)
