Is it possible to be anonymous with AvantGo? I doubt it. That said, how
does AvantGo give better viewer figures than their local systems? They have
to trust AvantGo?

At best, trying to force your readers to use specific other products etc
seems like a good way to lose your readers and give competing publications a
reason to start.
I'm just the messenger and quoted directly.  I agree with your comments, but the gist of his message was that his news site can better control advertising if the end user only accesses and views their content via AvantGo.  Since you cannot do any ad stripping with AvantGo, they can justify the cost of producing the news feed.  Same idea as commercial television.  I guess if you don't like the advertising, you turn off the TV ;-)
