I think it might be because you're using the correct definition rather than the thread's contextual definition that you ask that. The term "free software" is too nebulous; you yourself corrected Jonathan on his usage of it. There are definitions of "free software" which I meet; my projects are all under GPL.
For all concerned, this thread started on 2/25 with me and MJR:
Does JPluck work under a free software JDK/JRE?Interesting question. Since I've never paid for the Sun JDK/JRE and Sun does not request payment on their web site in order to download it, this has seemed 'free' enough to me.
Obviously, when he asked the question, he appeared to ask about "Free Software", not free (of cost) software. I misunderstood his intent, since for me free of cost is good enough for me. I personally have very little interest in "Free Software", nor do I really care. I can completely respect MJR's decision to care about the distinction.
So the thread's contextual definition was simply one of misunderstanding. Can we stop this now? I'm personally tired of 'beating this dead horse'.
