If you would like to add an item to the bugtracker that using url-pattern inside the <a> tag doesn't work, then someone can pick it up when there is time. This may have been left out on purpose, I don't know. The docs could make a mention one way or another.
Before you do that, try 'URL_PATTERN=XXXXX', that's what it says in Spider.py in VALID_LINK_ATTRIBUTES (an underscore not a dash).
Looking through the bugtracker, looks like there was a bug report on this in January, but wasn't in Parser category:
