Incidentally, this came up last year and the year before as well,
and it was removed because it took up too much valuable space in the line.

        [plucker-list]
        [plucker-dev]
        [plucker-announce]

or whatever variant you wish. Please don't use 'plkr', that means
nothing whatsoever to the project mailing lists, other than the CreatorID
in the app, and the website URL, which was only chosen because someone
else registered plucker.org before we did (and still hasn't done anything
at all with it, possibly just a squatter who doesn't like our project).

        Add to that the:

'Re: [plucker-list]', and you've just snarfed 19 characters from
the subject line, which could be used for real, actual subject material.
'Re: [plucker-announce]' would be even worse, though that one is under
moderation, and technically isn't used that much.

Most MUAs allow sorting and categorizing by color, relevance,
subject, headers, and other material, without polluting the subject lines
with the list name and all of the extraneous brackets and followups that
come along with it.

My vote is to leave it as it is. It works in every MUA so far, so
why complicate the process for a minority of readers who have a different
preference?

Also, you can just-as-easily rewrite the subject based on the
incoming headers of the message with procmail anyway, to include the
[plkr] or whatever you wish, for your OWN needs, without burdoning the
other users on the lists. SpamAssassin can do this as well very easily.

Lastly, if you think it is really a worthwhile option, why not
suggest a patch to Mailman, the list-management software, to allow a
per-user customization to display a custom list prefix in the subject line
of each message from that list? Seems like anyone good with Python should
be able to do that fairly easily.

There are quite a few solutions to solving this quandry.
