Ahh.. Thank you. I hadn't thought of that as a solution but it makes
sense.

I already have to hack the original database because it gives me three
versions of the catageory pages instead of one and I compile them into a
hacked list.

All I would have to do is split the hacked list by sections and run each
section independently as separate channels.

That's totally worth it.

In theory.  In practice, more than 16K records can be a problem,
and 10000 images may be a problem just on filesize.  You also
may run into problems not having enough memory on your
machine - which would look like the freeze you got.

You could probably do it if you put categories A-C in one pluck,
D-G in another, etc.

Meanwhile, I'm about to add a feature request for links
between documents.  It won't be there in the next release,
but perhaps eventually you could have a single virtual channel.
