Capturing Links

Hi,
Sorry if this is too basic a question but I seem to be missing something.
 
Trying to use plucker to capture a discussion forum onto my palm.
In configuring the channel on the desktop:
I have set the starting page to the page that lists the threads.
I want to download up to the next level of links that are the posts without all the links to other pages or posters' profile pages.
Thus,
Under the limits tab I have set maximum depth to 2.
I have tried to set the 'URL pattern' filter with the beginning of the threads' URLs (do I end it with an asterisk?)
I update the channel, then sync.
However on the handheld it only has the main page listing the threads. When I try to follow the links to a discussion it tells me that the link was "not downloaded because it probably exceeded the depth or was an external site". Neither of which seems to be the case.

Any suggestions?
