This doesn't really answer your question, but depending on which leapfrog device you are talking about, you can run Linux on them.

Yeah, I'd run into that. Cool, but not what I'm looking for :).

I did find responses from Leapfrog support saying that Leapfrog will not
consider letting customers upload custom sounds and that there will be no
GNU/Linux support :(.

There are also some people working on reverse engineering. I'd rather have
something that doesn't require reverse engineering.

Guess it's time to build my own with one of Stephen's OpenAnimals.com
penguins :).
