I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on laptop and every time there's an update to
kernel there's a new listing to the boot loader. I currently have
entries for
Ubuntu,with Linux 2.6.35-24-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-24-generic (recovery mode) Through

Ubuntu,with Linux 2.6.35-31-generic
Ubuntu,with Linux 2.6.35-31-generic (recovery mode)

Plus entries for M$ Vista as it's a dual boot system...

old grub was simple file modification of etc/boot.cfg file but with
Grub2 you have to modify another file and then run a make file or
something like that and I've tried the RTFM method under
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Use%20Boot-Repair%20Graphical%20Tool

but it doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone have clear instructions
for a neophyte like me to follow?

Dave

Legacy GRUB used to have a variable called HOW_MANY you could set to the
number of kernel versions to retain. GRUB 2 removed the easy way so now you
have to use other means.

Two methods. The easiest is at

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-remove-the-old-kernel-versions-from-ubuntu-using-ubuntu-tweak.html

another more traditional way is:
