I also did the same for another mail server. All I did is replace it's
ip address for the one that goes with smtp.googlemail.com. I don't see
why this wouldn't work for any other ip address you might want to
connect to.

First I had to add this to the hosts file.
74.125.137.16 smtp.googlemail.com <http://smtp.googlemail.com>
Then I had to enter this. 10.0.0.1 is my router's IP address.
route add -net 74.125.137.16 netmask 255.255.255.255 gw 10.0.0.1
Then I was advised to put that in /etc/rc.local which I haven't
done yet. After following the instructions it worked. I thought
I would pass along the solution in the event someone else finds it
useful.
