Actually.... It is a COLD REBOOT and to do this on a laptop you need to UNPLUG the charger/adapter, REMOVE the battery, Press pwr button for abt 20 sec or so. (This drains any residual voltage from the capacitors within the unit) Then put battery back in, re-attach your charger. A laptop is never fully OFF until you do this and it is the way to hard-reset the HARDWARE.

Good luck!

with my computer it won't allow you to turn it back on unless you plug it in,take out the battery, press the power button for like 30 seconds. Then when you press the button again it will turn back on. My question was really related to to how I turned the computer off, stuck it in my bag, and then went to flagstaff. Then when I got there the computer would not turn on as the sesor had been tripped. My question was really whether the sensor could be trpped when the computer was off.

Yes, most laptops have a temperature sensor that will shut them
down if they get to hot, but they will allow you to turn it back
on once it cools down again. I have never seen one the is
permanently shutdown because of that unless you got it hot enough
    to melt the circuits inside.

you know the the overtemp gauge that won't allow a laptop to
start if it is tripped? am I wrong in my discovery that it
can be tripped even while the computer is off?
