To 'create a bootable USB with persistence' is a different deal than to
'install Linux on a removable HD'
The first one is a pain, the second is trivial.
Dumb, if you will ... :)

I thought it was more complicated because I thought the files needed to

I am dumb, so I do dumb things:
1.- Boot with the install CD of your preference (Debian in my book),
2.- plug the USB,
3.- find the /dev/sd? of the USB (cat /prop/partitions),
4.- run a normal install to the USB,
5.- move on to your next geeky project...
YMMV

how does one create a bootable USB with persistance with an alread
downloaded ISO? Pendrive linux sounds like it shold do it but it is for
creating the drive from Windows. Another one would do it but it has to
download the ISO each time. Any ideas?
