Don't be too quick to dismiss a group just because they have a dues. Linux groups do cost a bit of money and/or donations to run smoothly. PLUG doesn't currently charge but this has been mostly due to a few people that have donated thousands over the years.

Dues are usually small enough that you could feasibly find the money in your couch and they allow the group to provide the niceties (like a projector if the room doesn't have one) that you otherwise wouldn't have. It can also be used for advertising dollars, travel expenses for big name speakers...etc...etc...

Yeah.... there is a computer club up here with a Linux sub section but
they charge too..... I'll check out the Library option. Thanks for that.
So how do you think I could let people know about this in
Prescott/Payson/Flagstaff?

Tucson Computer Society charged dues and it was mostly retired

serious folks for the most part.

I tried doing several in Payson through out the years. We have a
        small
computer club called PACA, but it really consists of a bunch of
        old guys that
show up to ask the couple real techs questions all night. Not a
        whole lot of
fun. And then while the library room they use is free to use,
        they charge dues
and are really fussy about it. Kind of funny.

I would suggest you make some flyers and hit up any book stores
        you have and
ask to post your flyer. A lot of times the book store will host
        you. ALso, try
putting a flyer in your local post office. Often they will let
        you put up a
flyer that can only hang around for 2 - 4 weeks, which is ideal.

Our library here will allow the room to be used without fee as
        long as you
record how many showed up. Maybe your library will do the same.

I want to do an installfest up here in lil ol cottonwood.
            how should I
            proceed?
1- I need to set a date and get a venue. Do you think I can
            get the local
            community college to donate that?
2- I need to let people know about it. I think I should
            advertise in Payson
and Prescott as well.... possibly Flagstaff. Cottonwood is
            in the middle of
those three places 60 miles to each of them. How do I
            advertise with no
budget? Maybe I should coordinate with the unix professor at
            NAU. Prescott
only has community colleges so they're windows-centric.
            Embry Riddle
Aeronautics is there but they teach airlplane mechanics so I
            don't know
            about computer stuff.
3- Arrange for a guest speaker or for someone to do a
            presentation. I need
to dig into the brain-trust of PLUG for that. Anyone want to
            volunteer to
escape the heat of Phoenix for a day?

Wait a second, there are people from Prescott and Payson on
            this list! Do
            you two have any ideas?

ps- I just wrote a note to the computer teacher at the local
            community
college and was wanting advice on the content:

            Hello.
My Name is Michael Havens and I'm an enthusiast for open
            source software. I
was wanting to do something where people who are interested in
experimenting with open source software in the area
(Flagstaff/Prescott/Payson) would all meet at a central
            location and have
Linux installed on their computer. I was hoping I could get
            the school to
donate a room and internet access to this purpose. Would you
            assist me in
            getting this?
