First, check the control panel or settings for the display or monitor
settings to make sure you have the best resolution for your monitors.
Otherwise, almost always, lack of resolution this has to do with the
video card or the motherboard embedded video chip AND the video card
driver including the video control software for the video card. If you
have a invidia or AMD card, you might be able to get the setup software
from the mfr site.
on the other hand, VGA, even SVGA I think, has limited resolution
compared to 1080P HD. It also depends on your monitor's capability.

well.... almost fine. the colours are a bit off and the colour
adjustments don't adjust it enough. Also the image isn't as sharp as
with the CRT and there isn't an adjustment for that. Is there a way to
fix those with linux?

Cool.... that fixed my brothers flat screen. One of the pins was bent.
Cool... I just discovered I was testing with the wrong cable! The
other monitor is fine. Thanks for the help

2. If the monitor has a menu, check the menus - does the
monitor have more than one input, like both a VGA input and a
DVI input or even an HDMI input? One of my monitors has all
three and the monitor's menu will allow me to choose which one.
Normally it will default to whatever is plugged in but that may
not be the case for your flat screen.
3. Do you have a special driver installed for your CRT
monitor? If so, you may need to remove it. (but I realize
that's not likely!)
4. Are the flat screens you have used? Are you sure they are
in working order?
5. Have you tried leaving the monitor on and just shutting down
and rebooting the computer? (It's stupid, but sometimes that
works.)

Well, both of them say, 'No signal detected', from two different

I can get to a free computer.

The use of a live CD was to see if it was an OS config
issue or
not. I have had interesting moments where I had to
define my
displays in detail before x would work. Not usually an
issue much
anymore but this is a good check to see if it is the case.
