Mike,
I don't know you, but I suggest that you slow down and take a couple of
deep breaths.
Think before panicking.
You are tearing things up faster than you or anyone can possibly deal
with them.
You seem to have internet connections. I base this on the communications
you are generating.
You changed something and now you seem to have networking problems.
Then you reset your router.
Now you are talking about replacing your modem/router. Isn't it working?
Aren't you on line? or are you using a phone for e-mail.
It makes a difference in working toward a solution.
Now you are asking for network help for a computer issue?
Is the computer futzed up. or have the network settings been futzed up?
Futzed? I am trying to be polite.
Remember, If It Ain't Broke Don't Futz With It
Figure out what your problem is first, by thinking, looking (did I plug
the right shit into the right places? Did I break a wire in one of my
connectors? Did I damage a port?)
Then go from there.

I'm thinking it is the router. Look what I found here

{
“kernel:… [5710660.580043] BUG: soft lockup – CPU#0 stuck …”
This error message appeared up to 10 times a day, different processes,
random times. Couldn’t find an answer anywhere. Also had frequent
“carrier dropped” messages on the cable modem interface. Replacing the
cable modem solved both problems.
}
I don't have the carrier dropped problem but that might be because I
am using the router as a switch. Thoughts?

hey... my dad is offering me a modem/router for testing. before I
go over there I need to ask if a modem/router can be used as only
a router.

Do you mean the 'BUG: soft lockup- CPU#0 stuck for 24s! [Xorg:

I did a search
<https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?hspart=ddc&hsimp=yhs-linuxmint&type=__alt__ddc_linuxmint_com&p=BUG%3A+soft+lockup-+CPU%230+stuck+for+24s%21>
for the BUG.... and happened upon this
<http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/70377/bug-soft-lockup-cpu-stuck-for-x-seconds>.

I googled around and by adding clocksource=jiffies to my
kernel i fixed it. Instead of jiffies you could also try "pit".
There are also reports of disabling C-states in the BIOS
<http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX127395>.
}
If I follow these instructions do they mean adding it to the
boot options or recompiling the kernel.
If you read the page it states, 'The cause was the hosts
network driver (realtek)...'
Would this be related to the problem I'm having with the
router? Maybe the router went belly-up.

Is it only this one computer with the problem, or is it
all devices on the network? Also, does your computer have
more than one network card? When you moved it, did you use
the same port on the router and on the computer?

Okay... this scares me! I can login to the GUI, I backed
up some new stuff. Thenwent to a tty.... no problem with
that. I then logged out and went to the login screen and
hit cntrl-alt-f1. everything blanked out. then I tried to
go back to the GUI but it won't. I'm thinking the
computer is screwed up.
Comments? Advice?

well this is interesting.... I reboot the machine and
at the login screen went to tty1 to check if it got
an ip address. Well, it wouldn't type. Then a message
appeared saying:
BUG: soft lockup- CPU#0 stuck for 24s! [Xorg: 1465]
and every now and then it would say that again.
sometimes it would say:
BUG: soft lockup- CPU#0 stuck for 24s!
[Kworker/0:2.68]
actually I think the decimal is just a character that
isn't showing up fully because at another line that
appeared the decimalwas like a dot towards the top of
the line and there were lots of characters that
weren't all there.

sorry.... I had to go to work...... now back to
the problem! unfortunately everyone is in bed but
me. is there a way to get the router to give ip
addresses without rebooting? the computer isn't
the fastest to boot (it was a vista machine).
WHile I was at work I was told to check that the
cable didn't go bad so whe I got home tonight I
tried another cable praying that was the problem.
Unfortunately not!
Oh.... I think you guys misunderstood.... I was
saying 'got it' to Gilbert (the message before my
last one.
