I had a guy tell me once that dealing with Linux issues is why he uses a
Mac. I guess you could say it is pay me now or pay me later.
I sure like cheap hardware and hope that nothing gets hosed.....

Turns out, the problem was that the update installed "Folder" under
desktop settings (hidden within that annoying cashew drop-down) and is
apparently not accessible in System settings. Why?
At least I got rid of all those annoying folders on the desktop.
But a further problem is that there is no "Desktop icon" and no
therefore
"Preferences" option under System settings. Again, why?
It is so blasted frustrating when Distros keep changing (and making
more
cluttered and confusing) the way things work without giving users the
ability to refuse forced changes that are unwanted and just mess things
up.
Dang!

1. Go to Menu and click the "System Settings" icon.
2. Click the Desktop icon under Preferences.
3. Untick the Desktop icons for Computer, Home ... etc.

After doing an update to Linux Mint 17, the desktop is now filled

(Why do they keep doing stuff to us that we do not want?)
