Sounds like the signal strength is marginal. Your touching it adds just enough to stabilize. There's a good site tvfool.com that will help you determine if you have enough antenna to get the channels you want at your location. (there's also fmfool.com for FM radio). You can reposition the antenna, such as put it on a higher shelf, re-aim it or try a broadband preamplifier.
