Thanks Brian.  I've read much the same, but did see some late reports that others said they were having some issues with 5.6.5 still too.  Not been brave enough to test the kde backports, last time was not so good an experience, but I do miss things like unused window transparency. I might give this a go tonight and see, hopefully it doesn't destroy anything beyond the qt/kde realm to fall back to cinnamon.
