Most likely is that you had a version of hugin that was either
downloaded directly or from a PPA that was no longer available to the
system. When you went to upgrade luminance it needed up upgrade a
library that hugin was also using but was incompatible so it required
you to uninstall hugin to continue.
Then then you installed hugin again it pulled a different version from
what was previously installed from your repositories and it's
dependencies were already aligned with the requirements of luminance, so
now everything works.

It is strange luminance and hugin are both installed. Now luminance
was not working so I reinstalled it with apt and then apt informed me
that it needed to uninstall hugin. I let it do it and after I was done
with what I had to do I reinstalled hugin. now both work as they had
before. Why is this? I figure it is the order in which the programs
were installed.
