for bare metal backup I use REAR(Relax and Recover) along with fsarchiver REAR can make iso files or make a bootable flash drive
fsarchiver is like tar, but it can recreate the filesystem too. also if the archive is corrupt, you olny lose the one file, not the whole archive.
