What file system is the drive formatted as? This sounds similar to the
type of permission issues to see when you use a filesystem that supports
users/permissions.

I have been knocking my head against a wall for the past hour. I am
trying to plug in a USB external drive and have Ubuntu 14.04 mount the
drive so I can write data to it. But the drive is always mounted with
root as the owner and group. I have read countless pages about how to
enable a user to read/write to the drive but to no avail. The drive is
automatically mounted in /media/mark/dive1. I have not created a
permanent mount point in /etc/fstab because the drive is, well,
removable, so it will not always be connected to the usb port.
There has to be a simple fix to this problem.
Thanks!
