This however may be more to your liking?

I really like it and wanted to back it, but that wasn't an option for me
at the time. Crowd-fund campaign completed a year ago, but the company
site says it's still live. Campaign updates say they're still working on
prototypes. I hope they are succssful as I definitely like the idea.
This also may be more your speed,
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/librem-2-in-1-tablet-that-does-not-track-you-laptop-computer#/
That would be cool. Crowd funding ended. Company site says the 2-in-1,
like what I want, is coming soon. EOMA68 with tablet, laptop and desktop
housing would be even better.

The Purism Librem 5 has been making a lot of news with KDE and GNOME
saying they'll support it.
I definitely like the hardware killswitches for cameras, microphone and
radio. Real airplane mode without all the tinfoil :).

moin moin,
I have to ask, with these prices, why not spend a little more and go with
a MAC?
Because that would be moving more proprietary and less trustworthy.
I can easily and somewhat inexpensively get nice android tablets.
I want something with a stronger Free Software ecosystem.
I did find there's Ubuntu for the android n7, so that might fit my needs.
Heck, a pi system with attachable touchscreen would actually be awesome.

moin moin,
I don't know if those system 76 (or whatever their name was) have
convertibles, but their price was actually pretty good.
I hear lots of good things about System76. I have a nice light laptop
from ZaReason. I'm quite happy with it as my primary laptop.
I also have an aircraft carrier for times that I need to live on a
laptop
for an extended period. Not as powerful as Brian's helicarrier, but mine
also doesn't have enough fans to levitate.
I checked both ZaReason and System76 before posting and neither had a
laptop that converts to tablet.
The laptop is my 3rd ZaReason device in the last decade. I've been quite
happy with their products and support. Not that I require much of the
latter.

And I forgot to mention - the Alienware is NOT a convertible...

I don't see a way to buy it without the windows tax. Anyone know a way
to get an unloaded XPS from Dell?
You have to search for "developer edition." Here is a link to one:
http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-noteboo
ks/xps-13-developer-edition/spd/xps-13-9360-laptop/cax13w10p
7b5135ubuntu
Also the awesome part is that the support also handles Ubuntu, so if a
motherboard goes out they don't complain that Linux must have broke it.
I'm currently using a Surface Pro 3. It was the only tablet that I
could find with an i7 in it, which I need. Everything else had the m3 or m5
which just isn't enough for what I use it for.
