Thanks Stephen ... I did everything that you suggested and I still get a black window or blank window when I open the Chrome browser. The title bar shows a web page open, but there is nothing in the open window.

Apt purge chrome and drop the chrome repo. Download fresh and rename/purge the chrome profile? That's a little scorched earth I know but it would help you sort out root cause.
