In reading the license it looks like one can "revive" CodeIgniter 2 and keep the name ... interesting. I need to do more research.
I liked the "old" CodeIgniter prior to version 3 or more so while EllisLab owned it. It was all I needed and it was well documented, light weight and fast. Add to that it was easy to learn.
Do you think there is any interest in a modern (meaning it runs under PHP 8) CodeIgniter version 2.x?
