On the rsync backup question - how are you doing it? You should be able
to have the backup machine entirely headless, as long as ssh can get to
it you should be fine - assuming you run the backup from the machine
being backed up.
if you are running the backup from the backup machine, cron should work
whether the lid is open, closed, or missing ;-) (again, as long as the
machine is running)

That being said, I would keep your lid open at least a little bit.
Having the lid closed causes the machine to get quite a bit hotter
than if you can have the lid open to let the heat out. Even if the
machine doesn't overheat and crash on you now, it will be thermally
throttling and you'll only get a fraction of the performance out of it
that you could be.
