Run the command  route -n
and check the gateway IP,  it should be pointing to your Internet router.

Check on your real machine and on the VM

Then check on the VM machine when you're running in NAT mode

I'm curious how the NAT mode gets out

In bridged mode, both machines should point to the Internet router
