Hmm.  I was momentarily confused.

10.* is class A, which means all 24 bits after the first octet 'matter' and are controlled by whoever controls your network IP addresses.

Which means that your network is 10.x.x.x, or 10.0.0.0/8, since all computers on your (non-subnetted) network will have their first octet equal to 10.

I was originally confused, but then I went and researched and the above statement should be totally accurate (assuming you read it as I intended! ;-)

The above explanation is null and void if you have subnetted your network ;-)

(See http://superuser.com/questions/1464492/ddg#1464517 for more explanation of the /<number> notation)

No.

Of you're trying to specify a whole network you would type "10.0.0.0/8",
which would cover everything in "10.x.x.x" ... whereas "10.0.0.0/24" would
cover everything in "10.0.0.x"

Unless you've intentionally segmented your network, you're probably just
running a /24, which is relatively normal, meaning everything in your
network is "10.0.0.x"

Alexander

I just installed snort ( or at least it is in process) and it is asking
me about the address range of the network. So I ran ifconfig and see that
it is on the 10 network. I know I could put any numbers in there but I
want to understand.... I'm thinking I will put 10.0.0.2/8. Will that
work? Why will it or not work.
