macs seem to fall into one of two groups: non-geeks who like what they
consider to be a sexy, usable interface that just works or geeks who like
what they consider to be a sexy, usable interface. Most of the geeks seem
to agree that there's some ugly borkenness under the hood.

The issue is about free software and running free software on a non-free
OS seems to be counterproductive - i.e. DRM enabled content doesn't run
on Vista OS and no amount of OpenOffice.org or Mozilla stuff is gonna
change that.

True that m$ and apple will still have DRM lockdown, but by getting
everyone to use Open Standards compliant software they can use whatever
they want and I can use whatever I want. Also, getting people used to the
apps and getting them to understand it's really the apps they care about
helps get them to see the value of moving to a stable, reliable operating
system such as GNU/Linux. Having eye-candy toys for them to play with
doesn't hurt, provided they're also stable and reliable.
