David,

Before going further:

You might also want to verify from your "Firewall Administrator (usually Senior
Systems Engineer managing Microsoft AD)" that you can get authenticated without
a "domain" authentication.  Some Cisco systems do an ICA Server/AD
authentication and require a bit more than just the VPN connection, which will
be a consideration using kvpnc...  Rarely, they can tell you exactly what
changes you might need under Linux-> AD.

CAUTION:  "They" often don't exactly know; you might get incredible
misinformation; you might step on the ego toes of ignorance (temper Nix
arrogance and irritated critical thought in all matters with "THEM" at all
times for best professional and social results)!

Once that is determined to be easily possible using just the cert and
connection string try adding:
kvpnc connect --domain $yourcert
If not successful go ahead and follow the instructions for Cisco Ubuntu here:

I'm installing vpnc now, which is supposedly a cisco-compatible VPN
client, and a Free one at that. I'm going to give it a try and if
failing that I'll let you know if I still need the official Cisco
client.
