Here's something interesting... I had to run a batch process that quickly exceeded my physical RAM. I have 8 GB of ram but the process required 18 GB.
When I made my swap device a 10K RPM Raptor the process took 13 hrs to complete. When I made the swap device my SSD drive, ti took 3.5 hrs.
