unfortunately, this is a fairly new and clean setup. I wonder if ti
could be the switch though. Very strange problem how it can take out
other networked computers, but yet not all of them...

I once had a similar issue and it turned out that somewhere in the
labyrinth of cables and switches we found a lone 10mb hub. Replaced
it with a new switch and all was good.
