Drivers probably aren't working right and probing the right resolutions from the display. Check your drivers in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log. What kind of video is it? If ati/nvidia, you'll want to install the proprietary blob drivers to get any level of performance and features.
