Mike, I believe you are running (something like) Ubuntu.
Try:
apt-get -y remove --purge ubuntu-restricted-extras
apt-get -y install ubuntu-restricted-extras
You may have to adjust the 'ubuntu' name, try
apt-cache search '*-restricted-extras'
Good luck...

unfortunately all the responses from the computer after issuing each
command I was not able to retrieve so these are the commands I issued (in
said order)
first I entered apt-get install <tab><tab> and was given the next two
programs to install:
apt-get install flashplugin-installer
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound
then I read the message suggesting the next command:
sudo apt-get install flash*
but when I ran it I got an error. the just of that was that the following
programs were conflicting. So I figured I would remove them :
sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-downloader flashplugin-installer
flashplugin-nonfree
and then I would reinstall everything
sudo apt-get install flash*
but there were other things broken
the error report from the previous command indicated that the next command
be issued
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-downloader flashplugin-installer
flashplugin-nonfree
but that caused the error:
Package flashplugin-nonfree is a virtual package provided by:
adobe-flashplugin 11.1.102.55-0oneiric1
flashplugin-downloader 11.1.102.55ubuntu0.11.10.1
You should explicitly select one to install.
E: Package 'flashplugin-nonfree' has no installation candidate
so because I had already issued ....install flashplugin-downloader I tried
the other package:
bmike1@Michaels-Laptop ~ $ sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin
that ran successfully
then I checked if a flash ap was working. It was so I was happy!

Inquiring minds want to know... what exactly did you mess around with to
get things working?

well apt-get install flash* failed but I messed around with it and got
things working. Thanks for your help.

the room mate here had the same problem a week or so back. I had to log
in and do an apt-get install flash* and it got anything with flash in the
name and description. sure, it is a shotgun approach, but it did work. one
thing you might want to try is get the vlc package and its various plugins.
those also work.

video tutorial for Kompozer and the video wouldn't run. I emailed them and
they responded that I needed flash. I then went to a page I viewed earlier
today and it too wouldn't run. I ran apt-get to reinstall it but it still
isn't working. I donn't know what else to say about it. The version that is
installed now is 11.0.1.152 . I don't know what version I had before I ran
apt-get. I have to go to work now so I will be back at about 10.
