You can do this through BIOS.
In BIOS menu, go to advanced->drive configuration
In that, change the "enhanced mode" to "legacy mode"; a sub-menu will appear.
In that sub-menu, you can choose which drives to enable and which to
disable. If you don't have any SATA drives, just select "PATA primary
and secondary".

Save changes and reboot. This should work for you. Older versions of
Linux distributions don't seem to recognize SATA drives, so they need
the legacy mode. While installing SuSE 9.0 I just switched to legacy
mode and select SATA 1/2 and PATA secondary. This worked for me and
now I'm running SuSE 9.0 on my SATA drive w/o any problem.

Regards,
Kapil
