The Govt recently announced the 'broadband policy'. See
http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=4385 They define
broadband as min 256 kbps and encourage higher speeds.

If this becomes a reality just think of the ***explosion*** of Free
Software awareness and actual usage and access to it... (some bored
school kids will actually do Linux instead of SMS-ing or playing
gulli-danda or watching MTV)

Hopefully now players like Tata/VSNL, Reliance and BSNL will offer
something like at least 1 mbps with unlimited download quota for under
Rs 1000 per month which I consider "true" broadband but thats a dream
for me 8-(

If anyone here works for an "ISP" like the ones mentioned above or
knows anyone who does then please visit or have them visit
www.broadband.org.in and fill out or look at the user-survey.

So far the most promising service I have seen is that of Exatt in
Bombay (exatt.com, exatt.net) they offer 256kbps *unlimited* downloads
for about Rs 800 per month (but whether the service actually works at
256kbps is another thing). Another provider I have heard about is
Tata/VSNL who are trial-running their 512kbps service in Bombay and
Delhi which is only Rs 360 per month (but then again I dont know if
they have download limits in MBs, they probably do, and that is just
disgraceful).

Also, I saw on the cable news channel "Headlines Today" that BSNL
would launch "broadband" in December in 190+ cities so I'm hopeful
there as well, especially since a BSNL phone exchange is just a short
stroll away from my house!

PS: If you're on Orkut, join the "Broadband India" community as well
as the "PLUG" community 8-P
