Look it up ;-)

A 'byte' is any fixed-length stream of bits (or something like that)...

An 'octet' is an 8-bit 'byte'.

You could have 1-bit bytes or 9-bit bytes or any length you prefer...

Its just that the 'industry' and 'academia' has 'standardised' on 8-bit
bytes...
