GCJ does this pretty well for Linux and the article talks about it doing that
on Doze with Eclipse. But I guess as far as native Java programming was
concerned, M$ was definitely a pioneer in this when it hacked Java to build
VJ++ which could then be used to generate native Doze binaries. This was a
major point of contention in the Sun-MSFT litigation. Of course M$ retaliated
in its trademark style, by making all future versions of its software,
Java-incompatible and the big fight continued to make headlines till the
recent Sun-MSFT settlement.

However as far as development using Java is concerned looking at Sun's recent
overtures towards freeing Java, it shouldnt be long before we can develop
Java applications using a free SDK. That effectively avoids RMS's so called
"Java Trap" ==> http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/java-trap.html and also speeds
up the development of the otherwise sluggishly moving GCJ.

Heuristics are bug ridden by definition. If they didn't have bugs,
then they'd be algorithms.
